Rediscovering My Ski Groove at Deer Valley

“Thirty years away, and I left knowing one thing: I will be back.”
After more than thirty years off the slopes, I finally returned to skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. From the moment we arrived, I felt the familiar thrill of winter adventure—except this time, I had shorter skis, a helmet, and a renewed sense of confidence.
“My first trip to Park City took place about 40 years ago…there was no such thing as snowboarding, and Deer Valley didn’t even exist yet!”

We kicked off our trip with a private, half-day ski lesson, expertly tailored for returning skiers. Our ski instructor, Michael Schrieber, was in our age range, so we felt totally comfortable. By mid-morning, I was carving gentle turns again, feeling the freedom and joy that only skiing can bring. The bluebird skies and perfectly groomed trails reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this sport decades ago.

Winter adventures in Park City go beyond skiing. We visited Utah Olympic Park, racing down sled tracks and trying the Olympic bobsled ride, guided by professionals. The adrenaline rush was unforgettable, and the surrounding snowy trails offered magical scenery for everyone—thrill-seekers or casual explorers alike.

Where We Stayed
We booked through Vacasa at Blackstone at the Canyons, a two-bedroom, 2.5-bath condo, 1,188 sq. ft., sleeps 5, and pet-friendly. Across from the Canyons Cabriolet and Transit Hub, it offered top-of-the-line appliances, underground parking, and easy access to the slopes, Main Street, and Canyons Village. Honey loved it as much as we did! Be sure to use Vacasa for your next adventure

No Park City trip is complete without a visit to The Viking Yurt. Our evening included a 25-minute sleigh ride up 1,800 vertical feet, culminating in a six-course Nordic-inspired dinner with fine wines and cocktails. For daytime visitors, the Yurt offers ski-in, ski-out lunches, complete with comfort classics like Buffalo Bratwurst or Grilled Cheese—perfect for a snowy bluebird day.

We also explored Main Street with Honey, taking in pet-friendly shops, cozy dog parks, and festive winter streets. For times when dogs aren’t allowed, Doginhaus provides cozy overnight care.
From skiing to sledding, from mountaintop feasts to strolls with our dog, our trip was pure winter magic. Deer Valley, combined with the beauty and charm of Park City, reminded me that it’s never too late to rediscover old passions, make new memories, and share adventures with the ones you love—including your four-legged companions.
